日本のアート業界についてどう思いますか？
What do you think about art industry in Japan?
ガーダー: 僕は日本のアート業界にはそれほど詳しくはないのですが、ヨーロッパやアメリカに比べて、アートを買うという考え方が一般的ではないことに驚いています。もちろん真剣なコレクターは大勢いると思いますが、もっと「普通」な人々、平均的な給料をもらって生活しているような人々の間では、その考えはあまり見受けられません。もしかしたら民芸品やアンティークを集める文化が根付いていたり、壁に絵をかける風習がないことなどが関係しているかもしれませんね。いずれにしろ、このことには僕も少し驚きました。
Gardar: I am not so super familiar with the Japanese art industry but I have been surprised to find that the idea of collecting art seems much less common here than it does in Europe and the US. There are for sure some large scale, serious collectors but the undergrowth of more “normal” people with a decent salary who also collect art seems to be a bit absent here. Perhaps because there is more of a culture for collecting crafts or antiques or other things or perhaps because there is less of a culture for hanging images on the walls. In any case it was something that surprised me a little.

Do you have any Japanese artist you have interested in?
ガーダー: 日本人の写真作品にはずっと興味を持っていました。根強い写真の文化と歴史があり、現代の作品も興味深いと思います。もちろん荒木経惟氏や森山大道氏など、未だに素晴らしい作品を生んでいる世界的な巨匠がいるのも恵まれていると思います。
Gardar: I have always been interested in Japanese photography. I think there is a really strong photographic tradition here and a strong history as well as interesting contemporary work. Japan is also in the fortunate position of having people such as Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama who are interesting in a contemporary perspective, still produce great works and are already historical figures.
あなたはニューヨークと東京、二つの国都市を拠点に活動しています。東京とニューヨークにおいて、最も違うポイントや考え方の相違はどこに見られますか？
You are based in NY and Tokyo, two country now. What is the most different thing/ subject/ way of thinking between Tokyo and NY?
ガーダー: 地域に対する考え方がとても違うと思います。僕はもともとノルウェー出身ですが、東京の地域に対する価値観はニューヨークよりノルウェーの考え方に近いと思います。ニューヨークは積極的な個人主義に基づいている（少し見栄を張った感じではあるけど）と思います。公共の空間でコミュニケーションをとる際、東京の人々はとても礼儀正しく丁寧で、ニューヨークの挑戦的な姿勢に比べて、僕は自然で楽だと感じました。
Gardar: I think the way of thinking about community is very different. I originally come from Norway and in the sense of community I think Tokyo is closer to Norway than New York is. The narrative of New York is so based on a kind of aggressive individualism (even though I do think that this is slightly a posture). The way people interact in the public space in Tokyo is very much more civil and polite and for my personality I find this more natural and comfortable than the confrontational manner in which these interactions happen in New York.
どこか東京で好きな場所はありますか？
Do you have any favorite place in Tokyo?
ガーダー: 東京にはたくさん好きな場所がありますね。僕は広尾に住んでいて、近隣の街、恵比寿、代官山、中目黒なんかが好きです。高円寺とか、もっと雑然としていてあまりギラギラしていない東京の街も好きです。東京という都市は個性豊かな街が無数に集まった集合体で、とても住み甲斐があります。
Gardar: There are a lot of places I really like in Tokyo. I live in Hiroo and I like the areas surrounding that, like Ebisu, Daikanyama, Nakameguro. I also like more random, less glamorous parts of greater Tokyo like Koenji. Tokyo is a huge city comprised of myriad interesting and heterogenous neighborhoods and I find that really rewarding.
